Poughkeepsie Journal article about The Piecemakers

April 26, 1998 Poughkeepsie Journal article which includes briefly, how The Piecemakers created a group quilt to donate to the Akwesasne Freedom School for their annual quilt auction fund-raising event.

Pictured is one block that was later sewn together with eighteen other blocks to make a larger quilt called "Symbols of Indigenous Peoples of the World."  Men and women of all ages and from various racial and ethnic groups worked together to show support for the AFS which teaches Mohawk students all of the subjects but within their own cultural context.  The students are taught to be proud of who they are. The creation of the quilt lets the students, teachers and parents at Akwesasne know that some people in the New Paltz area care about what is happening in the AFS. This was the first of many quilts that the Piecemakers would make for the school.
