This article tells how and why the Akwesasne Freedom School started. It includes interviews and photos from the 20th anniversary of the school. It mentions how a quilting group called The Piecemakers made and donated a quilt to be auctioned in order to help raise money for the school. Many other quilts were auctioned as well. There is a photo of The Thanksgiving quilt being auctioned and a photo of it being displayed with one of the 17 people (Karen Abrahamson) who worked on it. This was the second quilt that The Piecemakers made and donated.  The first quilt was purchased by Ann Whisk from Akwesasne for $950. The Thanksgiving Quilt sold for $4,500.  It was later destroyed in a house fire along with the Piecemakers third quilt.
